Grilled Pixels is the design practice of Adam Roberts. As a digital designer with a background in art & photography, I help brands express their unique voice through identity-driven products, digital experiences and design systems.

Not only that, but I also leverage the power of React & Nextjs, to develop enhanced experiences to the user, paying special attention to motion, sound and even 3D / Webgl.

I have 25 years experience in creating brands and digital products, stores and experiences with impeccable performance and undeniable value.

Projects can be done directly with clients or in a supporting role for design studios globally. To name a few I’ve helped so far; L+R, Rareview, Alan Klein, Engage DC, Baal Spots, Fortnight and many more.

My passion started when I was just 11 years old, seeing my Dad attempt to make his own website in Microsoft Frontpage, using animated gifs “everywhere”. Curiosity got the better of me and I engaged in throwing question after question at the gif master.

Who would have thought I was a natural negotiator, as I swindled the use of the family computer regularly after school. Using this time for the next 2 years to find my calling. At the age of 13, I landed my first client and recognised this path was my pursuit for excellence and creativity.

Since then, each project has been an opportunity for me to innovate, utilising a broad skill set to create work that is not only aesthetically beautiful but also functionally impactful.

I work remotely from my home office in Sheffield, UK. I can work with anyone from anywhere with some timezone cross-over.

Interviews / Talks?

Actively looking to engage as I force myself to be extraverted.

Final words on what makes me unique and right for you

I’m hyper focused on creating work that improves your bottom line. I design and code. I can lead teams, conduct interviews, talk to any person at any level to make them understand complex nuances of projects. I’m an adverse problem solver.

And to what makes me different; when I commit to a scope of a project, the amount of time I provide on your project will not shift the financial commitment from you. My estimate, is the final limit. Only a change in scope, would require a reassessment.

006

Are you available full time?

It would depend on my current situation. Over the last few years I've had a mix of full-time and short term contracts which affect my availability. I've also been able to take a mix of freelance work at the same time. I welcome you to get in touch and we can chat, I may just be looking for a full time role afterall.

Do you have experience in my industry?

Honestly, most likely. I've been doing this for over 2 decades, I've done hundreds of different projects in different industries while working at different agencies, a lot of which I just don't show here. However, I don't need to know the ins and outs of your industry, your processes, or anything of that nature.

I create products for your audience, no matter what the industry is and what I design and/or develop serves (in most cases) the same purpose.

Drive brand awareness if it's a storytelling / experience project, drive conversions / sales if it's marketing or eCommerce, drive a memorable connection by leaving your users happy and wanting more. At the end of the day, I design for humans and I look at all touch points with your brand. This is what UX is about.

Understanding the nuances of where your audience is, how they find you, how they interact with you and refining that experience for before, during and after. Whilst my focus is generally in the middle (during), with digital products, I can hollistically think for the broader picture as well.

What's your design process?

My process overall will differ depending on the project goals. For example, a landing page compared to a 3D experience, is a completely different process. But I'll highlight some of the top-level areas in order on what the average approach looks like.

  1. Initial meeting to see if we're a fit (30 mins)
  2. Project discovery workshop (usally 1-3 hours)
  3. Digital strategy & planning
  4. Sitemap / Content Flows and UX phase
  5. Research / Inspiration / Ideation / Storyboarding phase
  6. Concept and UI Design phase
  7. Prototyping phase
  8. Final review call (usually 1 hour)

And that's the typical design process. We would also have a weekly call for progress updates during each phase. And there will be moments where we need quick and easy feedback sessions. If you need a week to process, review and provide feedback, this will delay timelines. If we iterate quickly, we'll see results faster.

And if you're interested in the development process;

  1. Github / Vercel setup
  2. Project setup in Nextjs
  3. Setup DatoCMS and configure GraphQL schema
  4. Image/Video compression and add all content
  5. Configure page architecture and menu system
  6. Build components and interactions (mobile / responsive tested a long the way)
  7. Provide demo link once the homepage is done
  8. Update demo as I complete new pages
  9. Once all features have been built, we'll do a QA process where you get some time to run through everything and send any feedback for any bug fixes or minor iterations.
  10. Bugfix / amends phase
  11. SEO / Schema configuration
  12. CMS workshop
  13. Final vercel configuration and go live

These days I've been choosing Vercel over Netlify, but there's a big difference really. You can get away with free hosting which is why I recommend it.

Also, while my primary CMS is DatoCMS, I can use others if preferred, like Sanity or Payload. And I've also got some experience with headless Shopify which I'd like to do more of to be honest. And lastly, this process will look a little different if we're creating a 3D experience, or a web app where it involves something like Supabase.

Can you develop 3D / WebGL experiences?

It depends what you're looking to achieve. I have experience with Blender, Spline and Threejs / R3F and I'm continuing to develop this skill set to create work in the likes of Immersive Garden but it will take many years to get to that level on my own, but that is my goal.

However, creating a model from scratch, getting it in to your website and animating it on scroll is something I can do. Check out my archive to see what I've done. I also have a secret tool that I use to create WebGL shaders and interactions like the cursor effect you see here.

Also, I am regularly talking with 3 friends who are WebGL specialists, so if you're looking to create an immersive 3D environment and you'd like my expertise throughout that project, or even help with design direction / UI design, I can facilitate all of that. Best thing to do, schedule a chat and we can talk about your ideas.

Can you tell me about your tech stack?

My primary goal is to create blazing-fast websites that are not only optimised for search engines (SEO) but also feature elegant experiences and are robustly constructed to endure future challenges.

To achieve this, I utilise: Next.js (React) for front-end with Styled-Components for real CSS.

DatoCMS/Sanity as headless CMS’s for the backend. Netlify/Vercel/AWS for hosting (Preferably Netlify or Vercel).

GSAP/Motion libraries for animation.

Three.js / R3F / Spline for unique web experiences that involve 3D. Preferred method is using Blender to create models instead of Spline.

Previously, I was a strong advocate of GatsbyJS, but due to developments in the industry, particularly concerning Netlify's significant reduction in Gatsby's workforce and the subsequent lack of updates for Gatsby, I have transitioned to using Next.js. This shift was primarily to safeguard the continuity and success of my client projects.

As I've mentioned in a few places (LinkedIn); I have over 2 decades of experience with traditional code like HTML, CSS, Javascript / jQuery, raw PHP & MySQL and WordPress. While it's braggadocious of me to say, 10 of my developer friends told me I couldn't build a particular project in WordPress and I proved them wrong. I have the passion, drive and tenacity to get shit done and done right to a very high standard. Now, WordPress isn't something I offer any more, but I keep it highlighted to make people understand my knowledge, experience and capabilities. Also, I can use no-code solutions too like Framer and Webflow. Not that I advocate for it, since I enjoy actual coding and the end result will always be better, but should budget be a challenge, it's often a perfect solution to see you through.
